Auli Chopta Tour Package: Itinerary, Cost and Best Time (2026)

The Auli Chopta tour package brings together two of Uttarakhand’s most rewarding Himalayan destinations in one well-paced circuit. Auli sits at 2,800 metres above sea level and is India’s most popular ski destination, known for its long ropeway, wide snow slopes, and unobstructed views of Nanda Devi and Chaukhamba. Chopta, at 2,680 metres in the Rudraprayag district, is the base for the Tungnath-Chandrashila trek and one of the quietest forested meadows you can reach by road in the entire Garhwal region.

Covering both in one trip takes 4 to 6 days and gives you snow, trekking, a centuries-old Shiva temple, and the kind of Himalayan scenery most travellers come to Uttarakhand for.

About Auli and Chopta Tour Package: Two Destinations, One Complete Trip

Auli and Chopta sit about 106 km apart by road in the Garhwal Himalayas. Auli is for open snow slopes, a long cable car ride, and wide Himalayan views. Chopta leads you to Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world at 3,680 metres, and to Chandrashila Peak at 4,000 metres, where you get a full 360-degree view of the surrounding Himalayan ranges on clear days. Most travellers who visit one end up wishing they had seen the other. Covering both in one trip solves that.

About Auli: India's Top Ski Destination

Auli is in the Chamoli district at approximately 2,800 metres (9,200 feet). Its north-facing slopes stay snow-covered consistently from December through March, which is why it became India’s preferred skiing location. The Auli Ropeway connects Joshimath to Auli in about 20 minutes. The ride itself is worth doing even if skiing is not on your list. On a clear morning, Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, Trishul, and Dunagiri stretch out across the horizon from the cable car.

In summer, the slopes turn green and trekkers head to Gorson Bugyal, a wide alpine meadow about 3 km above Auli by trail. The mountain views are identical to winter, just without the snow. Chattrakund, a small lake below the main ski slope, sits inside oak and rhododendron forest and sees very few visitors despite being an easy walk from the main area.

One practical note for photographers: the best light on the Auli slopes falls between 6:30 and 8:30 AM. If you want the peaks with the first morning light, step outside before breakfast.

About Chopta: The Base for the Tungnath-Chandrashila Trek

Chopta sits at 2,680 metres inside the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. Dense deodar and oak forests surround the meadow, and the trail above the treeline gives some of the clearest views of the Garhwal peaks you will find anywhere in this region.

If you wake before sunrise in Chopta, you will hear almost nothing except birds and the wind moving through the deodar trees. By the time you reach Chandrashila, the first light begins catching the snow on Nanda Devi and Chaukhamba. There are very few places in Uttarakhand where a 4,000-metre summit is accessible without a multi-day trek.

Tungnath Temple at 3,680 metres is part of the Panch Kedar circuit, five sacred Shiva temples spread across the Garhwal Himalayas. If you plan to explore the full Panch Kedar yatra including Tungnath, this route works as an excellent starting point.

The Deoria Tal trek from Sari village, about 30 minutes by car from Chopta, is worth adding if you have an extra day. The 2.5 km trail leads to a lake at 2,438 metres where the reflection of Chaukhamba on still mornings is one of the most photographed scenes in the Garhwal region.

Auli Chopta Tour Packages: Choose Your Duration

YatraKey offers three package formats for the Auli Chopta circuit. Each is built around a realistic daily pace. We do not overload the itinerary.

    Standard

    Extended

    Complete

4 Nights / 5 Days Auli Chopta Package

This is the most booked format. Two nights in Joshimath for Auli, two nights in Chopta for the Tungnath-Chandrashila trek. You also get the Auli ropeway experience, a walk to Gorson Bugyal, and stops at Shankaracharya Math and Narsingh Temple in Joshimath. It works well for couples, first-time Himalayan visitors, and anyone with limited leave.

5 Nights / 6 Days and 7 Nights / 8 Days Packages for Auli Chopta

The 5-night version adds a third night in Chopta, giving you time for the Deoria Tal trek without rushing. This is the better choice for families with older children and for photographers who want to catch a proper sunrise from Chandrashila on one day and explore Deoria Tal on the next.

The 7-night version extends to Rishikesh, with river rafting on the Ganga as a final activity before heading back to Haridwar or Delhi. Some travellers use this format to begin with a night in Haridwar for Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri, which adds a strong sense of occasion to the start of the trip.

    What People Think About Us

Family, Honeymoon and Group Packages for Auli Chopta

    Families

The 5N/6D package works best. Children above 8 years can do the Tungnath summer trek. In winter, the snow trek requires good footwear and better physical preparation, so families with young children should travel in the April to June window. The Auli ropeway is accessible for all ages without any walking involved.

    Couples and Honeymooners

The 4N/5D package with a private cab is the right call. Chopta camp stays are atmospheric in winter, particularly when the meadow is covered in snow and the bonfire is the only light source in the dark. Early mornings at Chandrashila, before group departures arrive, are extremely quiet.

    Groups

YatraKey runs fixed departure dates for this circuit for shared group travel, which brings the per-person cost down. Groups of 6 or more can also request a fully customized private departure.

Day-Wise Itinerary: 4 Nights / 5 Days Auli Chopta Tour

This itinerary starts from Haridwar or Rishikesh. If you travel from Delhi, allow an extra day for the Delhi to Haridwar drive (210 km, 5 to 6 hours).

Day 1: Haridwar / Rishikesh to Joshimath (260 km, 9 to 10 hours)

Start no later than 6 AM. The drive passes through Devprayag, where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers come together at a sharp bend below the town — worth a 10-minute stop for photos. Then Rudraprayag, Chamoli, and finally Joshimath by evening. There is a good tea stall at Karnaprayag that most drivers on this route know. Take a proper break here because the road after Karnaprayag gets narrower. Check in and rest. Dinner and overnight stay in Joshimath.

Day 2: Joshimath to Auli and back (full day)

Take the ropeway up to Auli in the morning. Buy tickets early at the base station in Joshimath — the queue builds after 9 AM in peak season. In summer, the Gorson Bugyal trail starts from the top of the ropeway. The walk to the meadow takes 45 to 60 minutes and the views of the Garhwal peaks from the flat meadow are wide and unobstructed. In winter, skiing lessons and snowboarding rentals are available at the slope. Parking near the ropeway base is tight during winter weekends, so arriving before 8 AM helps. Return to Joshimath by late afternoon. Evening visit to Shankaracharya Math and Narsingh Temple if energy permits. Dinner and overnight stay in Joshimath.

Day 3: Joshimath to Chopta (100 km, 4 to 5 hours)

Drive via Gopeshwar and Ukhimath. The road from Ukhimath to Chopta passes through dense forest. In spring, the rhododendrons along this stretch are in full colour. Check in to your camp in Chopta in the early afternoon. Take a short walk in the meadow in the evening. The best photography light in Chopta falls between 4 and 6 PM when the western light hits the forest and meadow together. Bonfire and dinner at camp. Overnight in Chopta.

Day 4: Tungnath and Chandrashila Trek

Start at 7 AM at the latest. The trail from Chopta to Tungnath Temple (3.5 km) takes 2 to 3 hours at a comfortable pace. The trail is well-marked and passes through a short stretch of alpine meadow before reaching the rocky section below the temple. After the darshan at Tungnath, push 1 km further uphill to Chandrashila Peak at 4,000 metres. Allow 45 to 60 minutes for this final section. The view from the top takes in Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedar Dome, Bandarpunch, and Chaukhamba. Return to Chopta by early afternoon. Rest, dinner, and overnight at camp.

Day 5: Chopta to Haridwar / Rishikesh (230 km, 7 to 8 hours)

After breakfast, drive back via Ukhimath, Rudraprayag, Srinagar, and Devprayag to Haridwar or Rishikesh. Tour ends on arrival.

Best Time to Visit Auli and Chopta

The best time for this tour depends entirely on what you want from the trip. December to March is the right window for snowfall and skiing at Auli, with Chopta also snow-covered and dramatic. April to June offers comfortable temperatures, open trekking trails, and the best conditions for families. September to November gives you clear skies and golden meadows with far fewer crowds.

Winter (December to March): Auli’s slopes get reliable snowfall, and skiing runs from mid-December through early March. Chopta in January looks like a completely different place compared to summer — white, still, and extremely cold at night. The Tungnath trek becomes a snow trek requiring proper footwear and a guide. Night temperatures in Chopta drop to minus 5 to minus 10 degrees Celsius.

Summer (April to June): The best window for families and first-time trekkers. Tungnath temple reopens in April after the winter closure. By May, the rhododendrons along the Chopta trail are in full flower. Temperatures stay comfortable at 5 to 20 degrees Celsius during the day.

Autumn (September to November): Auli transforms into a breathtaking winter destination with thick snow covering the meadows and mountain slopes. Skiing season usually begins in mid-December and continues until early March, attracting adventure enthusiasts from across the country. Temperatures often drop below freezing, especially at night, creating perfect conditions for snowfall. Visitors should carry warm clothing, waterproof shoes, and essential winter gear to enjoy the snow safely and comfortably.

Monsoon (July to August): Not recommended. Heavy rainfall triggers landslides on the Rishikesh to Joshimath highway, and the trek trails at Chopta get slippery and difficult.

Auli and Chopta Weather by Month

The weather in Auli and Chopta changes significantly throughout the year, making each season ideal for different types of travelers. Winter brings heavy snowfall and world-class skiing opportunities, while spring and summer offer pleasant temperatures, blooming rhododendrons, and excellent trekking conditions. During autumn, crystal-clear skies provide breathtaking Himalayan views, making it one of the best times for photography and sightseeing. The monsoon season, however, experiences frequent rainfall and slippery mountain roads, so travel is generally not recommended.

Whether you’re planning the Auli Ropeway, the Tungnath–Chandrashila Trek, a family vacation, or a snow adventure, checking the monthly weather can help you choose the perfect travel window.

Places to Visit on Your Auli Chopta Tour

    In and Around Auli

Gorson Bugyal (Gurso Bugyal): A wide alpine meadow 3 km above Auli by trail. The views of the Garhwal peaks are wide and open. In summer, it is a green, flower-covered slope. In winter, it serves as an extension of the ski area.

Auli Artificial Lake: A water reservoir maintained for snowmaking near the ski resort. It sits in a quiet spot and makes for a short, easy walk from the main slope.

Joshimath: The base town for Auli at 1,875 metres. Shankaracharya Math here, also called Jyotirmath, is one of the four maths established by Adi Shankaracharya. Narsingh Temple is nearby. Vishnu Prayag, where the Dhauliganga meets the Alaknanda, is 12 km from town and worth the short detour. Find out more in our guide to places to see in Joshimath.

Kwani Bugyal: A less-visited meadow above Auli, good for bird watching. Much quieter than Gorson Bugyal.

    auli-chopta-package-3-night-4-days

    In and Around Chopta

Tungnath Temple: The highest Shiva temple in the world at 3,680 metres, and part of the Panch Kedar circuit. Open from April to November. In winter, the deity shifts to Ukhimath for six months.

Chandrashila Peak: 1 km above Tungnath at approximately 4,000 metres. On clear days, Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedarnath Dome, Bandarpunch, and Chaukhamba are all visible from the top. The sunrise from Chandrashila in October is one of the better mountain photography moments in Uttarakhand.

Deoria Tal: A lake at 2,438 metres reached by a 2.5 km trek from Sari village. The reflection of the Chaukhamba massif on still mornings is striking. If you plan to add the Deoria Tal trek to your itinerary, the 5N/6D package is the one to book.

Kanchula Kharak Musk Deer Sanctuary: Forest area near Chopta with musk deer, Himalayan black bear, and high-altitude birds. Good for a quiet morning walk with a naturalist guide.

Things to Do in Auli Chopta Package Tour: Adventure and Activities

Skiing and Snow Sports in Auli

The Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam maintains the ski slope. Beginner lessons and equipment rental are available on site. Beyond skiing, you can try snowboarding, guided snow treks toward Gorson Bugyal, and photography walks. For a full breakdown of the ski season and what to expect, read our Auli skiing guide.

    Trekking

The Tungnath-Chandrashila trek is the main event. The Gorson Bugyal trail from Auli and the Deoria Tal trek from Sari village are excellent additions if you have the time.

    Camping and Stargazing in Chopta

Chopta has some of the lowest light pollution in Uttarakhand. On clear nights, the Milky Way is visible from the meadow with the naked eye. Most camps run a bonfire in the evenings, which is the social centre of the campsite after dinner.

Tungnath-Chandrashila Trek: What You Actually Need to Know

The Tungnath-Chandrashila trek is manageable for most travellers but you should know what you are signing up for before you show up at the trailhead.

    Detail

    Information

    For Beginners

The summer version is well within reach with basic fitness. Start at 7 AM so you reach the summit before afternoon clouds move in. Spend one night in Chopta before the trek day to let your body adjust to the altitude.

    For Senior Citizens

The Tungnath section is doable with trekking poles and a steady pace. Many visitors above 60 years reach Tungnath and find it very satisfying. Treat Chandrashila as a bonus, not a requirement. Carry water, a light snack, and good non-slip footwear.

    Winter Trekking

In December to March, the trail is covered in snow. You will need micro-spikes or crampons (available to rent in Chopta), warm layers, and a local guide. Do not attempt the winter version without one.

    Emergency Information

The nearest hospital with emergency facilities is in Rudraprayag (approximately 60 km from Chopta). Carry personal medication, a basic first aid kit, and keep your guide’s phone number accessible.

Accommodation Options on the Auli Chopta Tour

In Joshimath (base for Auli): Most packages use hotels in Joshimath since the town has a wider range of accommodation than the ski area itself, and the 14 km road to Auli is straightforward. Budget guesthouses run from Rs 800 to 1,200 per night. Mid-range hotels with breakfast are Rs 1,500 to 3,000. Limited premium options exist on or near the Auli slopes.

In Chopta: Swiss camp tents are the standard. The camps include sleeping bags and heavy quilts. Even in summer, temperatures drop sharply at night. There are no large hotels in Chopta currently, and that is part of what keeps the place as quiet as it is.

    Tier

    Joshimath / Auli

    Chopta

    Local Food and Garhwali Culture

Chopta and Auli are not places with wide restaurant menus. Your meals mostly come from camp kitchens and roadside dhabas, and that is exactly right for this kind of trip.

The best Maggi stop on the Joshimath route is a small dhaba just before the Chamoli bypass. Most experienced drivers on this route know it. It is not marked on any map but every local stops there. On the Tungnath trail itself, a few tea and Maggi stalls operate close to the temple in summer season.

Most camps in Chopta serve a fixed dinner of dal, rice, roti, and sabzi, with basic snacks available during the day.

The Garhwal region has a strong connection to the Panch Kedar pilgrimage. Villages along the Chopta route are small, and the hospitality at dhabas and camps is genuine and uncomplicated. If you want to extend this trip into a full Panch Kedar circuit, read our guide on the full Panch Kedar yatra including Tungnath.

    Pahari rajma-chawal

Mountain kidney beans slow-cooked and served with rice. Simple, filling, and exactly what you want after a long trek

    Aloo ke gutke

Spiced local potatoes, served as a side dish at most dhabas.

    Mandua roti

A flatbread made from finger millet, common at altitudes above 2,000 metres.

    Til ki chutney

A sesame seed chutney that comes with most Garhwali thalis.

Planning Auli Chopta Tour but Feeling Confused?

    Travel Tips and Safety Guidance

Altitude Sickness: Both Auli and Chopta sit above 2,500 metres. Most travellers adjust without problems, but altitude sickness (AMS) is a real risk if you climb too fast. Symptoms include headache, nausea, and fatigue. If you develop severe dizziness, breathlessness, or loss of coordination at any point, descend immediately.

    To stay safe:

    • Drink 3 to 4 litres of water daily
    • Avoid alcohol on your first day at altitude
    • Do not rush the Chandrashila summit on Day 1 at Chopta
    • Rest one night in Joshimath before going up to Auli in winter
    • Carry Diamox if your doctor recommends it for high altitude

    Road Conditions and Backup Routes

The Rishikesh to Joshimath highway runs alongside the Alaknanda river and is prone to landslides during monsoon and occasionally in heavy winter snowfall. After Joshimath in peak winter, the road to Auli may require a 4×4 vehicle. YatraKey drivers carry tyre chains and know alternate halts if a road is blocked. We keep travellers updated on road conditions the evening before each drive day.

    Permits

Entry into the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, which covers the Chopta-Tungnath area, requires a basic permit. YatraKey handles all forest entry documentation as part of the package. You do not need a separate trekking permit for Tungnath-Chandrashila, but carrying your ID card is advisable.

    Weather Updates

We track Uttarakhand highway and weather alerts and brief travellers the night before any mountain drive. In winter especially, this matters.

    For Families with Children

Children above 8 years can do the Tungnath summer trek. The Haridwar to Joshimath drive is 9 to 10 hours, so build in proper rest stops. Pack snacks and a change of clothes in the day bag.

    Packing Guide for Every Season

Packing the right gear can make your Auli and Chopta adventure safer, more comfortable, and far more enjoyable. Weather conditions vary dramatically between winter and summer, so carrying season-appropriate clothing and trekking essentials is important. During winter, temperatures often fall below freezing with heavy snowfall, making insulated clothing and snow gear essential. In contrast, spring and summer offer pleasant trekking weather, requiring lighter clothing while still protecting you from strong mountain sunlight.

Whether you’re planning a skiing holiday in Auli, the Tungnath-Chandrashila trek, or a relaxing Himalayan getaway, this packing checklist helps ensure you’re fully prepared for changing mountain conditions.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Four nights and five days covers both destinations comfortably starting from Haridwar. If you want to add the Deoria Tal trek or prefer a slower pace, five nights and six days is the better format. The minimum to see both properly is four nights.

Packages start at approximately Rs 10,000 per person for a budget 4N/5D option from Haridwar. Standard packages for two people typically cost Rs 14,000 to 18,000 per person. Premium options go above Rs 22,000. The exact figure depends on your group size, hotel category, and travel month. Contact YatraKey for a specific, itemized quote.

The package covers private transport, accommodation, breakfast and dinner, a trek guide for Tungnath-Chandrashila, and local permits. The Auli ropeway ticket, skiing costs, lunches, and personal expenses are excluded. The full tables are in the cost section above.

No. The ropeway ticket is excluded from our base packages because the price changes by season. We help you purchase it on the day. The approximate cost is Rs 750 to 1,000 per person.

The Tungnath section (3.5 km from Chopta) is manageable for most people with basic fitness. The Chandrashila extension adds 1 km of steeper terrain. In summer, both are accessible with proper footwear and a slow pace. In winter, the trail becomes a snow trek and needs a guide. If you have never trekked before, the summer version is the right starting point.

Tungnath Temple stands at 3,680 metres (12,073 feet). Chandrashila Peak is at approximately 4,000 metres (13,123 feet). The trek starts from Chopta at 2,680 metres.

For skiing and snow in Auli, December to February is the best window. For the Tungnath trek and relaxed sightseeing, April to June and September to November work best. For the combined trip covering both, winter gives you the snow experience at both. Summer gives you easier trekking and more comfortable conditions overall.

Snowfall at Auli typically starts from mid-November. Peak snowfall is in January and February. Snow can remain on the upper slopes through March.

Yes, with the right planning. Summer is the better season for families. Children above 8 years can do the Tungnath summer trek comfortably. The Auli ropeway has no age or fitness requirement. The main challenge is the long drive to Joshimath, so plan proper rest stops and carry snacks and water for young children.

Auli is fully accessible via the ropeway with no trekking needed. The Tungnath temple trek (3.5 km) is doable for most reasonably fit senior travellers with trekking poles, good footwear, and a slow pace. Chandrashila is optional. Staying hydrated and not rushing the climb makes the biggest difference.

Joshimath (base for Auli) to Chopta is approximately 106 km via Gopeshwar and Ukhimath. The drive takes 4 to 5 hours depending on road conditions.

Delhi to Joshimath is approximately 500 km, around 14 to 15 hours by road. Delhi to Chopta is approximately 450 km, around 12 to 13 hours. Most travellers break the journey with a night halt in Haridwar or Rishikesh.

Plan Your Auli Chopta Trip with YatraKey

The Auli Chopta circuit covers a lot of ground for a 4 to 6 day trip. You get the snow slopes and ropeway at Auli, a forested Himalayan meadow at Chopta, the highest Shiva temple in the world at Tungnath, and a 4,000-metre sunrise at Chandrashila. The route passes through the Garhwal valleys at their best and the drive itself is worth the effort.

YatraKey has been running this route from Haridwar across all seasons. We use experienced drivers, reliable camp partners in Chopta, and a straightforward pricing model with nothing hidden.
